Neon was discovered by William Ramsay and Morris Travers in 1898. Neon is the chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol Ne and atomic number 10. The name is derived from the Greek 'neon', meaning new. It is a colorless, odorless gas that comprises 18 parts per million of air. Neon will not react with any other substance. It is produced from liquid air for ornamental lighting because it glows red when an electrical discharge is passed through it.
